A new dental surgery and decontamination room were fitted out within the Nightingale Unit at HM Prison Wandsworth in South West London.

HM Prison Wandsworth is a Category B men’s prison in the London Borough of Wandsworth, South West London. It is a large secure estate with a significant healthcare requirement.
The project formed part of the new Nightingale Unit, a healthcare block created to replace the previous dental surgery. The wider project took several years to reach approval. Once approval was given, the dental works were completed within a few weeks.
The room had already been fitted with medical cabinetry by the main contractor. That cabinetry had been designed for general healthcare use, so it needed to be replaced with a dental specification suitable for surgery workflows, decontamination requirements and dental equipment installation.
The existing cabinetry was removed and disposed of before the surgery and decontamination room were refitted to a dental specification.
Plumbing works included adapting the existing services for sinks in the surgery and decontamination room. Additional supplies were installed for the dental equipment, with a new suction line run to serve the surgery. The chair floor box services were also adjusted so the dental chair and supporting equipment could be installed correctly.
Electrical works included power and control wiring for the intraoral x-ray machine, chair power and control wiring, plus additional sockets to support the clinical layout.
Gerflor Metallica multilayered flooring was fitted with cove and capping at cabinetry plinths and walls to support cleanability in the clinical areas.
The project also included decorating and project management, helping coordinate the dental installation within the wider healthcare block.
The completed project provided HM Prison Wandsworth with a new dental surgery and decontamination room within the Nightingale Unit. The original medical cabinetry was replaced with a dental specification, allowing the room to support clinical workflows, equipment services and daily decontamination needs.
The new surgery gives the healthcare team a purpose-fitted dental environment within the prison estate. The layout, plant equipment, cabinetry, flooring and services were coordinated to support safe treatment delivery, easier cleaning and reliable day-to-day operation.
