Dental Centre Tenterden Surgery Conversion

A complex surgery conversion within a Grade II-listed building, transforming a former decon room into a fully equipped, ambidextrous surgery. Careful planning and sensitive refurbishment delivered modern functionality while respecting the constraints of a historic setting.

Background

Led by Dr Ambrose Ebhohimen, Dental Centre Tenterden has provided high-quality dental care in Tenterden, Kent since opening in 1999.

The practice offers a full range of services including general and cosmetic dentistry, implants, emergency treatment and children’s dentistry.

To support ongoing demand, the practice planned to convert Surgery 4, previously used as a decontamination room, into a clinical surgery. The decontamination facilities were relocated to an adjacent room.

The project came with added complexity due to the building’s Grade II listing, poor wall conditions and a significant amount of legacy pipework and cabling that needed to be concealed without compromising compliance or aesthetics.

Solution

We delivered a full refurbishment of the surgery while carefully working within the limitations of a listed building. Existing flooring was removed and walls were stripped back, repaired and plastered before being finished with fresh emulsion paint.

Electrical circuits were adapted to support new sockets for cabinetry and dental equipment, while plumbing services were reconfigured using a premium plastic push-fit system to accommodate new sinks and surgery services.

Clinical Gerflor Metalica vinyl flooring was installed with hot-welded joints and full cove-and-capping to meet infection control standards.

The air compressor was decommissioned, removed from the surgery and later reinstalled in an external shed, where it was set up and fully tested.

Outcome

Surgery 4 has been successfully transformed into a modern, fully compliant clinical space that supports both left- and right-handed clinicians.

The ambidextrous Eurus S8 system improves flexibility, while the upgraded cabinetry, flooring and services enhance workflow and infection control.

Despite the challenges of working within a listed building, the completed surgery integrates contemporary dental technology with a clean, professional finish.
